How To Create A Slideshow On Facebook Cover Photo
How to Design a Facebook Business Page Cover Photo and Video 2020 [Free Canva Template]
The first thing a visitor will see when they click on your Facebook Business Page is that large Facebook Page cover photo space or banner.
Uploading a show-stopping cover photo to your Page is a perfect way to make a truly memorable first impression on potential prospects. And if you're feeling confident you can 'wow' them by uploading a video instead to showcase your product or service.
So in this article I'm going to show you three ways to optimise your Facebook Page cover photo space.
You're going to learn -
✤ How to design a Facebook Page cover photo or graphic to grab attention (with expert examples)
✤ The Facebook Page cover photo size for 2020 (plus a free Canva template for all devices)
✤ How to create Facebook Page slideshow
✤ How to create and upload a facebook Page cover video (with expert examples)
But before we dive into the details I just want to share with you why you only get one chance to make a first impression, and how you can do that with visual content marketing strategies.
visual content IS AN incredibly powerful marketing tool
First of all humans have the ability to absorb and make sense of visual information in fractions of a second. In fact we can do this 30X faster than blinking!
Early man would never have survived had they been unable to make snap decisions based on the visual information they received.
Like it or not we make instant judgements about the things we see around us every second of every day. We can't help it; it's in our DNA.
According to psychological studies carried out at Princeton University it takes,
Not only that, similar studies carried out have concluded that a combination of text and visuals will increase a person's ability to understand and retain information by as much as 300%.
And if that is not enough to persuade you of the power of visual content, have a think about those ads we see on our TV screens from time to time. You know the ones I mean, created by charities that really tug at the heart strings? Just think of the images and videos News channels have been sharing from Australia over the past few weeks. Who didn't feel compelled to dip into their pockets and make a donation?
But that is the point!
Visuals have the ability to connect with us on an emotional level and prompt us to take action.
So as a marketer if you can connect with your audience and move them emotionally you can get them to take your desired course of action.
Right, so enough about that, let's roll our sleeves up and dive into how you can make an impact with your Facebook Page cover photo or video.
First of all ensure you've read Facebook's Policies for Business Pages, especially concerning cover photos -
"Your Page's cover photo or profile picture must not include a verified checkmark, and also must not include third-party products, brands or sponsors."
That's simple and straightforward enough.
Before you start creating ensure that, like all visual marketing assets, the photo / graphic / video you upload to your Page's cover space is -
-
relevant
-
recent
-
adheres to your unique visual brand style, and
-
helps you achieve your overall business goals.
You're not limited to using photos for any of these projects; graphics work just as well. In fact, why not try out a mix of photos and graphics for a more unique and branded creation?
1. How to Create a Facebook Business Page Photo
Let's start at the beginning and think about the image size Facebook requires for a Page's banner space.
Facebook Page Photo Cover Dimensions 2020
At the time of writing (January 2020) the current dimensions for a Facebook Page cover photo are 820 X 312 pixels.
If you want a really crisp and clear image when uploading to Facebook double these dimensions so you're using a template 1640 X 624 pixels.
So far, so good.
However, the tricky bit comes when you try and figure out which part of the image is visible on a desktop, tablet and smartphone device and then ensuring elements you consider to be essential are visible on all of them.
To help you out I've created a free Canva template which you're free to download. I'll give you the link later on in this blog.
How to Upload a Photo to a Facebook Business Page COVER SPACE
So let's start by uploading a single photo or graphic.
(i) From Desktop
Hover your mouse over the Cover Photo area and you'll see a small camera / video recorder icon in the top left hand corner.
Click once on the icon and you'll see four options to -
◦ Choose from photos
◦ Choose from videos
◦ Upload photo/video
◦ Create slideshow
Select "Choose from photos" if you'd like to use a photo that is already uploaded to Facebook. You can select from Timeline Photos, Cover Photos, Profile pictures, Instagram Photos (if you've linked Facebook with Instagram) and mobile uploads.
If you'd like to upload a new design from a local computer folder choose the third option, "Upload photo/video".
Once uploaded you can "Drag to Reposition" your image using the four-arrowed cursor.
When you're happy with the way everything looks, just click the blue " Save" button.
That's all there is to it.
(ii) From a Smartphone
It's a similar kind of process, really, and very intuitive.
I have an Android smartphone so I can only share what I see with you. But I'm fairly sure there's nothing too different to uploading a photo from an iPhone.
This quick video will help you.
EXPERT EXAMPLES OF FACEBOOK PAGE COVER PHOTOS
There are many ways you can use your Facebook Page banner to your advantage to market your business products or services.
Don't feel that you have to keep the same graphic in place for the entire year, you can change it two, three or even four times, particularly if you're using it to promote a new product or event. Keep it fresh and exciting for your audience.
Have a look at some expert examples and find some inspiration. What can you learn from these Pages and can you do something similar with your own?
1. Content Marketing World
The team at CMI use their Page to promote their annual event, Content Marketing World, in Cleveland.
2. Backlinko (Brian Dean)
Brian is the KING of SEO, both for Google and YouTube search; he uses his Facebook cover graphic to convey his brand's USP (Unique Selling Proposition).
3. SEMRush
Market leader in online marketing software and SEO experts, SEMRush's banner space is used to showcase their USP.
4. Rebekah Radice
One of the best social media marketers in the world, 'one of the most influential women in marketing, Rebekah is a highly sought-after keynote speaker, brand ambassador, social media writer, digital marketing specialist and business consultant'.
Rebekah has used a combination of photography and graphics to convey her expertise. Notice how she maximises her chances of generating leads by drawing attention to her Page's clickable button and entices visitors to 'Learn More'.
5. MAC Cosmetics
Beautiful, sensual photography is used to draw attention to and promote one of their products, a new line of lipsticks.
6. Canva
Not surprisingly Canva have used their space to share one of their brand values, which is supporting the local community in light of the recent spate of devastating bush fires.
2. How to Create a Facebook Page Cover Slideshow
This is such an under-utilised but wonderful opportunity for you to showcase your brand with up to five different images.
Before starting please check Facebook's own guidelines when it comes to creating slideshows for a Business Page.
When you're done follow these step-by-step instructions to create a slideshow -
◦ Select up to five different photos / graphics.
(You have the option to allow Facebook to choose photos for you from a selection already uploaded to your Page.)
◦ Alternatively upload them from a local folder on your desktop / tablet / smartphone.
Personally I'd select images that you've designed and optimised specifically for a Facebook Page cover so they have the correct dimensions. Remember, first impressions count!
◦ Once uploaded you can use the "Drag to reposition" tool to ensure each image is in the right place.
◦ When you're done click on the "Save" button in the bottom right hand corner.
That's all there is to it - you've created a Facebook Page slideshow!
Unfortunately at this time Facebook has no 'autoplay' which will automatically transition between each image. Instead use the arrows at the sides of each image to toggle between each one.
Suggested photo / graphics Tools
1. Canva - (free or Pro account)
Canva really is the best Facebook Page cover photo / graphic maker, since it has plenty of pre-formatted templates to inspire you.
You don't have to upgrade to Canva Pro to create stunning graphics but, of course, you will benefit from a much wider choice of templates and elements if you do.
If you don't want to use Canva, you might like to take a look at the following photo editing tools -
2. ToolWiz (available for Android and iOS)
3. PicsArt Photo Editing Studio (available for Android and iOS)
( Please note : these apps have no pre-formatted templates available so you will have to ensure you customise each image dimension.)
If you are looking to create a much more engaging experience for your Facebook Page visitors, the next logical step is to create a cover video.
3. How to make a Cover Video for a Facebook Page
You really don't have to rush out and buy a load of expensive equipment to create a professional-looking video since your smartphone already has an incredibly powerful camera / video maker.
I'm going to show you how I created this video for my own Facebook Page using a series of good quality photographs and some decent video editing software.
Facebook Cover Video Dimensions 2020
A Facebook Page video needs to be between 20-90 seconds in duration.
You might see some conflicting suggestions about the dimensions your video needs to be but I used exactly the same dimensions as I did for a static image.
Facebook guidelines state,
"Keep in mind your cover video should be at least 820 x 312 pixels and between 20 and 90 seconds. For best results, choose a video that's 820 x 462."
I recommend you double these dimensions to 1640 x 624 pixels to ensure your video isn't blurred when you come to upload it.
CREATING A VIDEO FROM PHOTOS
To make a video out of a series of photos or graphics, upload the image files to Canva. You'll need to use the same Facebook Page Cover Photo template as before.
You may have to resize / reposition each photo onto the template to ensure it fits properly.
Customise each photo using the fabulous editing tools Canva has to offer. You can experiment with filters, create your own branded filter, have fun with the new photo effects or add some funky elements. If you have the Canva Pro 👑 version you can now remove the background of a photo and customise a completely new one.
Once you're done download the photos to a folder on your desktop or mobile device.
( Tip : images files tend to be very large so it's always a good idea to get into the habit of compressing them using tools like TinyPNG or compressor.io .)
Moving over to your video editor, upload the final photo files to the Media folder.
I use Filmora Wondershare v9 since it has some fabulous effects and transitions that really do add a professional touch to the video.
You will almost certainly have to customise the project settings to ensure you have the correct dimensions (1640 x 624 pixels).
Once you're done editing and adding the final touches to your video ensure you download it using the best quality settings.
( Tip: just as I do for image files, I regularly use HandBrake to compress videos and save them in my local files. It is completely safe to use and is available for Mac, Windows and Linux.)
UploadING a VIDEO to a Facebook Business Page
The final step is to upload the completed video onto your Facebook Page.
(i) From Desktop
◦ Hover your cursor over the camera / video icon in the top left hand corner of the cover photo space and select, "Upload photo/video".
◦ Reposition video if necessary using the four-arrow cursor and then click "Next".
◦ If you want the video to be replayed in a continual loop switch on the little button at the bottom LH corner where it says, "Automatically replay video in a loop" and then hit "Publish"!
Ensure your Page visitors have the best experience possible by ensuring the video plays in HD. You'll need to double-check Facebook's video settings to do this.
◦ Click the downward arrow in the top right hand corner of your Page and select, "Settings".
◦ On the left hand side you'll see a list of options; at the bottom you'll find "Videos".
◦ Click the link where you'll find "Video Settings".
◦ All you need to do is ensure the "Video Default Quality" is set to "HD if available".
That's it, you're done!
(ii) From a Smartphone
Uploading a video file from your smartphone is almost identical to the way you uploaded a photo / graphic, only you will select a video file rather than a photo / graphic.
